De Industrieel, Zaandam
This site was once home to an industrial gas factory dating back to 1859. Factories from this era were designed with a remarkable sense of refinement and detail. Large masonry surfaces were broken up into wall panels on a more human scale. At street level, the factory connected harmoniously with the surrounding buildings. Higher up, the openings and ornaments became larger. This distinctive design approach inspired us in the creation of De Industrieel.
After determining the parceling in height and width, the façade composition in relation to the staggered balconies was developed. The balconies and façade divisions correspond with the layout of the basement, middle section, and crown, thereby emphasizing the tripartite division of the façade.
The townhouses line the west side and each features its own entrance leading to the slightly elevated ground floor. Every townhouse has a unique character and identity, referencing the typical regional façade architecture, but interpreted in a modern way.
