New build fire station Veenendaal
Veenendaal was in urgent need of a new fire station. We embraced the challenge of designing a facility for the Utrecht Safety Region (VRU) that not only meets all functional requirements but also exemplifies the interplay between modernity and sustainability.
Fire station design requires a precise understanding of operational procedures and spatial logistics. Drawing on our extensive experience in this building typology, we developed a layout that optimally facilitates both rapid emergency response (turnout) and post-incident debriefing. Beyond these primary functions, the building also efficiently accommodates administrative workflows and the servicing and maintenance of firefighting equipment.
In close collaboration with the fire department, we designed rational, function-driven floor plans that enhance operational performance. Simultaneously, we implemented a sustainable and demountable construction method. Timber served as the principal structural and aesthetic material. Together with a highly insulated building envelope, green roofing, and photovoltaic panels, the timber-based design significantly reduces the building’s carbon footprint, aligned with contemporary environmental standards and future-proof ambitions.
